Shopping small isn't going to solve all of the sustainability problems overnight, but I believe that the little choices we make can add up to something meaningful.
As a UK based business, I aim to source my materials from only other UK small businesses. This refers to a mixture of independent shops, local craft stores, and specialist sewing suppliers.
I believe keeping things local and independent helps a great deal in terms of sustainability. When a customer buys something from me, I get to go ahead and other small makers/businesses when I buy my materials to restock.
It creates a lovely little chain of small business support; you support Button & Bramble, I support local craft and sewing stores, and together we all keep the handmade community going.
Waltons Fabrics, Goldthorpe
My main fabric shopWaltons Fabrics is based in Goldthorpe, Rotherham. They specialise is dance wear fabrics , dress fabrics and craft cotton.
This is my absolute go-to. Lovely staff, amazing selection, great prices! It’s like my second home there, honestly.
Oh Sew Crafty, Kidderminster
My go-to online shop
Oh Sew Crafty is based in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. They have a premium range of dressmaking, cotton, and quilting fabrics online and in their store.
Anything I can’t find in Waltons, I’ll for sure get them from Oh Sew Crafty.
Debbie Shore, a UK-based designer
Debbie Shore is a British sewing expert, best-selling author, and former television actress and presenter. She has a beautiful selection of her own designs available on her online store. Debbie is based in Lincolnshire, UK.
Her daughter, Kimberley Hind, also designs her own fabrics which can be bought on the online store. They are typically 100% cotton, often organic, and wonderfully colourful prints.
Fabric Love, Colchester
Fabric Love is based in Colchester, Essex. They stock beautiful, good quality, reasonably priced fabric.
I love buying fat quarter packs from here when I just can’t decide on one or two prints!
The Craft Box, Elsecar
The Craft Box is based in Elsecar, Barnsley. They offer a wide range of extensive specialist stocks for cardmaking, scrapbooking, knitting and sewing.
Whenever I visit Elsecar Heritage Centre, I just have to pop in and stock up on cute bits!
